Career Tips > 9 Job Search Tips for New Graduates

By Kathy Kristof

College graduation season is set to launch millions of youthful job seekers into an already depressed employment market. If you’re among the masses, realize that preparation is key. Here’s what you need to do to get hired.

1) Edit your profile. Those drunken party photos might have impressed your Facebook friends, but now they could dissuade a prospective employer from hiring you, says Stephen Miles, vice chairman of executive search firm Heidrick & Struggles and co-author of Your Career Game. Recruiters do extensive web searches on people they intend to hire, including checking social media sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. If you’ve posted compromising photos or a stupid status update (i.e. Nice day. I think I’ll call in sick and go to the beach…) it could cost you a job. Get rid of it.

2) Do your homework. Don’t just figure that you can post a resume on monster.com and find work, says Janice Bryant Howroyd, CEO of staffing company AppleOne. You ought to study all aspects of your chosen field and seek information about the companies doing business in that area. Go to the company web sites and see if they’re posting open positions, too. If you send a resume, tailor it specifically to the job you’re seeking, Howroyd suggests.

3. Prepare to relocate. Live in a city where the job prospects are bleak? You can vastly increase your chance of getting work by seeking employment in other zip codes. The folks at job search site Indeed.com recently came up with a list of the best and worst cities to find work.

4) Think small. Many graduates focus on big, brand-name companies, but it’s the smaller and mid-sized companies that are doing most of the hiring now, Howroyd says. Taking jobs that “no one wants” is often an opportunity that no one else sees, adds Nathan Bennett, professor of management at Georgia Tech and the other co-author of Your Career Game. A first job is an opportunity to get experience. The smaller the company, the thinner the staff, the more likely you are to learn a wide array of skills.

5) Set targets. Set goals every day for either sending out a set number of resumes; filling out a set number of applications or finding a set number of new opportunities. Don’t hit the beach until you’ve hit your goal. You can’t change the job market, but you can determine how hard you try. Trying harder than your peers makes you the one most likely to get work.

6) Be persistent. If you go to an interview and don’t hear from the employer, follow up with a phone call. If they gave the job to another person, don’t be angry — be interested. Politely ask the hiring manager if he or she can tell you whether there was something that the other person did that particularly impressed them or something that you did wrong. If your approach is respectful and aimed at learning (rather than second-guessing their actions), they’re likely to help you better position yourself for the next interview. And if they tell you that you were fine, the other person was just more qualified, don’t be shy about asking them to keep you in mind for the next opportunity. If you don’t have a job in three or four months, call again and see if anything has opened up.

7) Work your network. Ask your friends, your parents, your parents’ friends, if they know of anything that would suit you. Check in with your college career office and attend their alumni functions. When there are hundreds of people applying for a given job, a personal referral can make your application stand out.

8) Be a temp. Some companies may not be willing to hire permanent full-time staff, but need help. You can sign up with a temporary company, like AppleOne, that will send you out on a daily basis to these companies. The benefits: You earn money; you get to know employers and employers get to know you.

9) Don’t despair. It’s a rotten job market, so it could take time to get work. And when you do get work, it may not be the ‘perfect job’ that you envisioned. Keep a good attitude and don’t let it get to you. Every job — even a nightmare job — is experience on your resume and a potential reference for a new employer. Do you best no matter where you end up working, and chances are good that you’ll get a better job in no time.

Plan Your Appearance to Make a Great First Impression

Your personal appearance is a critical component of that all-important first impression when you walk into the room for your interview.
Some people don't think about what they're going to wear until the morning of the interview. Then they scramble to find something that's appropriate, clean, and doesn’t look like it’s been slept in.
Imagine putting on that rarely used suit an hour before your interview and discovering that it no longer fits!
Plan your outfit in advance, try it on to make sure it fits well, and get it cleaned and pressed if
necessary.
When deciding what to wear, think "conservative business attire." Even if you are interviewing for a field job in which you'll wear jeans and steel-toed boots, those clothes are not appropriate for the interview. It's always better to dress "up" than to dress "down."
The key is to look professional.
Here are some preparation tips:
• Think about your hair in advance and make sure it's as ready for the interview as your clothes. Do you need a haircut or touch-up on the color? This goes for mustaches and beards, too.
• How are your teeth? If they’re not pearly white, consider using one of the many teeth-whitening products on the market today. Dingy teeth really can make a negative impression, so don’t ignore this.
• Freshen your breath, especially if it's been a while (or if you've eaten or smoked) since brushing your teeth. Don't go into the interview chewing gum.
• Do not plan to wear perfume or cologne. Having no noticeable scent is better than turning your interviewer off by wearing too much perfume/cologne (or wearing a scent that unpleasantly reminds an interviewer of an ex-spouse). And many people are allergic to ingredients in perfumes and colognes. It's safest to wear no scent at all.
• Women, if you decide on a dress or skirt, make sure it's not too sh ort. Be conservative. By the way, pantsuits are perfectly acceptable these days if they meet all the other criteria.
• Don’t forget to consider your shoes. Chose a pair that is stylish, but conservative and comfortable. (Spike heels are not a good idea.) Make sure they're clean and/or shined.
Remember, your goal is to look professional and conservative. This applies to makeup, nail polish, jewelry, body piercings, tattoos, etc.

The 10 Worst Job Tips Ever Part I

By Liz Ryan

The world abounds in bad advice for job-seekers. Here are some spectacularly unsound directives. Nearly every day, someone sends me a bit of astounding job-search advice from a blog or a newsletter. Some of this advice seems to come directly from the planet X-19, and some of it seems to have been made up on the spot. Here are 10 of my favorite pieces of atrocious job-search advice, for you to read and ignore at all costs:

1- DON'T WRAP IT UP
The Summary or Objective at the top of your résumé is the wrap-up; It tells the reader, "This person knows who s/he is, what s/he's done, and why it matters." Your Summary shows off your writing skills, shows that you know what's salient in your background, and puts a point on the arrow of your résumé. Don't skip it, no matter who tells you it's not necessary or important.

2- TELL US EVERYTHING
Another piece of horrendous job search advice tells job-seekers to share as much information as possible. A post-millennium résumé uses up two pages, maximum, when it's printed. (Academic CVs are another story.) Editing is a business skill, after all—just tell us what's most noteworthy in your long list of impressive feats.

3- USE CORPORATESPEAK
Any résumé that trumpets "cross-functional facilitation of multi-level teams" is headed straight for the shredder. The worst job-search advice tells us to write our résumés using ponderous corporate boilerplate that sinks a smart person's résumé like a stone. Please ignore that advice, and write your résumé the way you speak.

4- DON'T EVER POSTPONE A PHONE SCREEN
A very bad bit of job-search advice says "Whatever you do, don't ever miss a phone screen! Even if you're in the shower or on your way to be the best man at your brother's wedding, make time for that phone interview!" This is good advice is your job-search philosophy emphasizes groveling. I don't recommend this approach. Let the would-be phone-screener know that you're tied up at the moment but would be happy to speak at 7 p.m. on Thursday night, or some other convenient time. Lock in the time during that first call, but don't contort your life to fit the screener's schedule.

5- DON'T BRING UP MONEY
Do bring up money by the second interview, and let the employers know what your salary requirements are before they start getting ideas that perhaps you're a trust-fund baby and could bring your formidable skills over to XYZ Corp. for a cool $45,000. Set them straight, at the first opportunity.

0diggsdigg Five Ways to Find an Unadvertised Job Today!

Job Vacancy Indonesia, Employee, Vacancy

A huge number of jobs are never advertised. How do you go about snagging one of these?
Network:

This is one of the best ways to find a job. Let people know you are looking for work. Tell everyone - your relatives, friends, neighbors, people at the gym. You can also talk to people who work at a similar position to the one you want. Let them know of your skills and credentials. Who knows when they may be asked to recommend someone for a job and your name will be fresh in their mind.
Investigate:
There's a couple of companies you've been looking at, but you don't see them advertising jobs in the paper or online. Find their website and check it out. Companies often post their job ads on their corporate site and don't advertise them anywhere else. A little digging might reveal they are hiring for your dream job.
Ask if a Company is Hiring:
If you are interested in working for a specific company, ask them if they are hiring. They may take your resume and keep it on file. The next time they are hiring, before they incur costs to advertise, they will look through their resumes first. And you'll be there.
Contact your Professional Organization:
If you belong to a professional organization or association, give them a call. Ask them if they are aware of any job opportunities with any companies in your field. They can be very knowledgeable about opportunities because often companies will go to them for advice on hiring or finding staff.
Contact your Local Chamber of Commerce:
They know of most businesses in a local region. They can help you find out who is hiring and who isn't. They can also inform you of new businesses (maybe a large company is coming into the area and is looking for staff) and put you in touch with business leaders. This gives you the opportunity to use your networking skills and to introduce yourself to those who make hiring decisions.
Finding unadvertised jobs is all about putting yourself out there and looking for opportunities. It's about taking the time to seek out your dream job even if no one is telling you how or where to apply. And the payoff can be very satisfying.

Students: Looking for a Sports-Related Summer Job?

Job Vacancy Indonesia, Employee, Vacancy

If you love sports, there's no reason why you can't make it a part of your summer job. Check out these ideas on how to incorporate your love of sports into a job.

Hockey in the Summer?
If you're into sports, particularly hockey, why not consider applying to work at a summer hockey school or camp? These jobs are perfect for students because they are usually only for the summer. They are also a great way to get experience in coaching and working with kids, especially if you are pursing a sports, recreation, or education degree.

Summer on the Green:
Golf courses need tons of help in the summer. From driving range attendants, to landscaping workers, to working in the pro shop, you'll be exposed to golfing all summer. It's a great way to get your foot in the door if you're looking at gaining some golf-related experience.

Life-Guarding and Swimming Instruction:
If you prefer being in the water, you should check out these two summer job options. They generally require more experience and certification than some other summer jobs, but they are a great way to combine your love of water with making some summer money. Opportunities for life-guarding and swimming instructors can be found at city pools, beaches, summer camps, and recreational facilities.

Indoor Sports Facilities:
There are lots of different opportunities at indoor sports facilities that can be great if you're into sports. You can work at skating rinks, bowling alleys, in a fitness centre, or at a pool. Jobs range from doing maintenance, customer service, or selling tickets for events. A good way to prepare for a job like this is to get First Aid Certification before you apply for a job, since many sports facilities require this.

Retail Sports Jobs:
If you love sports, why not consider applying to work at a retail store that focuses on sports? You'll have the valuable knowledge that will make it helpful for customers who are looking at getting sports equipment or information about starting a sport. You might also be offered an employee discount which could benefit you as well. Consider big box sports stores and traditional stores that have sports departments.
You don't have to sacrifice your love of sports when you're looking for a summer job. Just think creatively and look for opportunities that allow you to use your sporting skills.

The Benefits of Temping

Job Vacancy Indonesia, Employee, Vacancy

Working as a temporary worker at a company has its advantages. Being a temporary worker can be a great way to update your skills, gain valuable work experience, and have a flexible lifestyle. Temporary workers usually sign up with a temp agency, go through a screening and testing process, and get offered temporary positions at different companies.

Flexibility:
Perhaps the biggest advantage to temping is flexibility. You can choose assignments when you are available for work according to your schedule at locations you want to work at. If you want to take time off, you simply let your agency know that you're unavailable for work for that time period.

Experience:
Temping is a great way to improve your skills, meet new people, and discover new industries. Because your assignments can vary often, you get a chance to try out many different work ennvironments, thus adding to your bank of skills. For those who are unsure which industry they'd like to work in, it's a great way to find out what you like. For first-time job seekers or recent grads, this offers transferable experience and skills. It's also a great way to fine-tune your existing skills with on the job experience.

Insight:
If you are new to an area, this type of work is a great way to gain experience in the local job market. Since you might not be aware of the different companies that are hiring, by working with a temp agency, you can benefit from their experience and knowledge of the job environment.

A Foot in the Door:
Being a temp gives you valuable insight on how a company works. You can use this insight and experience to become a permanent worker. Often, companies will prefer to hire someone they've worked with before. And you'll have a better idea of the job, what it takes to work there, and if it's really for you. Temping at a company you'd like to work at also offers you the opportunity to "interview" for a job. By working hard and going the extra mile, you give your supervisors a chance to see you perform at the job successfully. It's also a great opportunity to network with your new colleagues should openings not be immediately available at the company.

Slow Economy?
Temping is a great way to take advantage of a slower economy. Many companies prefer to hire temporary help when times are leaner. If you've recently been laid off, temping can provide you with a way to stay in the job market and keep your skills current while you look for a permanent job. Many temporary staffing agencies also offer benefits to their temp workers, so it can be a great way to continue to have some security while changing careers or work situation.

Why Waste Time? What Not To Do When Sending In Your Resume

By Sara Parent

Job Vacancy Indonesia, Employee, Vacancy

After employers have placed a job ad, they might have to go through hundreds of resumes to sort out which candidates they would like to interview. Why not give yourself a fighting chance by avoiding these pitfalls?

Not Qualified for the Job:
Why apply for a job that you are not qualified for? You shouldn't apply for a job when you do not have the essential skills being sought. Of course, if you have the skills, and are just shy some experience, you can certainly try. But if they are looking for someone with 5 years experience, and you only have 2 year's worth, you will likely not get the job. And that's wasting an employer's time.

Not Sure?
One of the biggest time wasters is people that apply for jobs they aren't sure they really want. When you apply for a job, whether through an employment agency, or through an employer directly, make sure you would be ready to take the job should it be offered to you. If you aren't, if you haven't talked to your family about it, or you aren't sure you're ready to leave your present employer, don't wait and see if they call you before deciding if you want the job. Of course, it's okay to change your mind later, but if you aren't sure in the first place, why waste their time?

Embellishments:
You might not see it as lying, but essentially, it isn't too far off. Saying you are qualified at a certain aspect of the job requirement when you clearly aren't is a waste of time. We once had someone apply to us for a job that required French language skills who couldn't speak a word of French, despite his resume implying he could. Obviously on essential skills, you will likely get tested or evaluated somehow. Exaggerating to get a job is definitely NOT the way to go.

Confusing Resume:
Nothing slows down an employer like having to figure out what the heck your previous job was, and reading through a 10 page resume. Some job titles aren't really clear, so make sure you explain what the major duties and requirements were of your past jobs, that way employers know what skills you have and what sort of work you can do. Your resume should be succinct and to the point. It should not exceed two pages at the most. Avoid wordy paragraphs about your life goals. Your resume should tell the employer what you skills are and really, be a walking endorsement of your abilities, confidence, and previous experience.
Make sure there aren't any typos or spelling mistakes. Some common ones are "alot", "seperately", and "definately". Check with a dictionary if you aren't sure of a word before submitting your resume. If they hire you, you will be a reflection of the company and they will be looking for someone who presents an accurate, professional, and careful representative.

Applying Incorrectly:
If an employer looking for email resumes says they don't want you to include an attachment but would rather see your resume in the body of an email message, why wouldn't you do that? Many companies won't open attachments for security reasons and when you are not following instructions on how to apply for a job, you are telling employers you don't care. It shows a lack of respect and an inability to listen to directions, two things employers are certainly not looking for. Take the time to find out how employers want you to apply for a position. Then follow the instructions. If your resume isn't properly formatted for an email message, do up a plain text version of your resume so that, you'll have it for those employers not wanting a Word version. If you can't follow simple application instructions, how will you be able to do the job?
Not following instructions, applying for a job you aren't qualified for, and having an unprofessional resume are all ways to indicate to an employer that you aren't really serious about applying for a job. Why not increase your chances of being hired by making sure you don't waste their time or yours?

Employment Law Solicitors: How to Choose the Right One for You

By Meena C Shah

Job Vacancy Indonesia, Employee, Vacancy

You've just been informed that you are being dismissed because your job has been made redundant. While this may probably be the worst thing that has happened to you as an employee, it isn't the end of the world. Under the employment law you are entitled to certain claims from your former employer as a result of your redundancy. However, if you are like most individuals who have also been made redundant, it is most likely that you are not familiar with employment law. You need the services of an employment law solicitor.
Most people are often too intimidated to even consider seeking the services of an employment law solicitor. This has a lot to do with the fear of the costs involved with hiring a solicitor. Good solicitors are willing to provide you with a free consultation either on the phone or in person to help determine whether you do have a case worth pursuing. If you do have a case, the employment solicitor will provide you with an estimate of the costs and expenses before proceeding. Stay away from solicitors who want to charge you immediately without first hearing your side of the story.
Now that you have decided on seeking professional help, the next step of course is to choose the best employment solicitor to hire.
With all the available employment law experts and solicitors around, the main thing of course is for you to get the best for what you can afford. This is not of course to say that you should scrimp on your budget. Remember expertise does come at a price. Often the inexpensive services come from solicitors who may lack the experience or knowledge necessary for you to get the most out of your claims. Always look for the solicitor's credentials first then decide whether you can afford their services.
Another good way to choose the right employment solicitor for you is to check out the internet. Good solicitors will have a website that is both comprehensive and informative. You should be able to know the extent of the services that they have, experience, even sample case reports to know if they are able to handle your particular case. A website says a lot especially about the way a group of solicitors or a firm is organized. If you understand their website and are interested, chances are you will like the kind of services they can offer you.
Aside from a good website, good solicitors will also be easy to contact. Good employment law solicitors should provide you with all the necessary information for you to contact them and not just hide behind a fancy name for a firm. They should be able to provide you with a toll-free telephone number, a complete address so you can mail them or visit them directly at their office, an email address and an easy to fill out inquiry form.
Finally, your chosen employment solicitor should be able to talk to you in layman's terms and not try to impress you with heavy legalese jargon. You're trying to find help to understand something not find someone who will confuse you more.
Remember, employment law solicitors are there to help you make something positive out of your negative situation so strive to always find the ones who can help you make the most out of your redundancy.

Tips for Successful Direct Mail Marketing

By Ron Morton

Job Vacancy Indonesia, Employee, Vacancy

Considering Direct Mail Marketing? Good idea.
Direct Mail has been around forever and is still considered the most personal style of advertisement because no other medium can give you the ability to touch and feel it like mail does. There are many things to think about before you jump into a bulk mailing campaign; who your customers are, how you're going to reach them, and how many potential customers can use your product are just a few.
Do lots of research on direct mail, it never hurts to know more than you should. Keeping mail pieces that you have received is good too because it lets you get ideas from businesses that are in the bulk mail game already, and knowing what your competitors are doing can be an advantage.
Determining your mail route strategy is a very important factor. What neighborhoods will produce the most potential customers? Income, location, and household count should be three big decision makers when figuring out your mail distribution. Creating a database from current customers is a good strategy too, and sending direct mail to these current customers with coupons and upcoming sale items keeps these customers coming back for more. But know that there are potential customers out there awaiting your mail piece, you just have to know how to find them.
Creating your mail piece can become the tricky part. You need to have something that will catch the customer's eye, whether it is a great photo on the front or "SALE" in big letters, that always gets me to look. But the designing of your mail piece is part of a whole other department.

Quirky Ways to Get Your Resume Read

By Bruno Deshayes

Job Vacancy Indonesia, Employee, Vacancy

Unless you want a quirky job you probably don't want to go quirky about your job application. Do you want to be paid with real money or monopoly currency?
The first pitfall to avoid is putting a photograph of yourself. Leave that to your facebook page if they want to check it out. Unless you are applying for a role as an actor or performing arts where a whole press-book is required a photo of yourself can be detrimental. People will hire you for your skills and your brains - not for your good looks. Remember more and more women sit on recruitment panels and your sex appeal might not cut it with them...
Next pitfall are unsubstantiated claims. Trust, honesty and loyalty are in short supply in our confused world. What you say about yourself need to be corroborated by circumstantial evidence. Don't say you are the fastest, the tallest, the quickest, etc... simply state the challenge you faced, the action you took and the result it produced. That's all an employer is interested in and they just want to know if you can do it again for them - simple, huh?
Next pitfall - going wild with fonts and colours. Your application might be passed around to various people on the recruitment committee, emailed to an iPhone, a Blackberry or an android smartphone. How mangled you will look through a not-so-perfect email program on those devices? If you want your layout and composition to remain unaffected then stick to the PDF format. Recruitment agencies hate it because their databases can't scan it for keywords.
Next pitfall - confusing your resume for an essay or a monologue. Unless you apply for a role as a writer and are asked to submit samples of your prose, you should not bore your audience with your introverted view of the world since you became unemployed. Employers are not interested in your moods, your political or religious views - all they want to know is if you can be productive from day one without any need for training or induction.
Next pitfall - ignoring your industry lingo. The best way to be rejected is to show a lack of grasp for your industry values. New lobby groups are forcing employers to comply with more and more regulations and standards. What is best practice in your field? Do you use due diligence? What about occupational health and safety? What about anti-discrimination laws?
